A fundamental right trampled, a collective response
The right to housing is enshrined in the Belgian Constitution. But in Brussels, this right is too often ignored: unaffordable rents, substandard housing, discrimination, evictions…
With Le Cri des Locataires, we wanted to create a simple and concrete response to this reality. We do not speak on behalf of those affected.
We listen, we amplify, we build connections.
This site is a frontline tool:
To inform tenants about their rights
To guide towards useful resources
To give a voice to those who are not heard
Our approach is based on research, testimonials, and discussions with housing associations and public actors.
This project is built on a simple idea: by making rights accessible and understandable, we give power back to tenants. And that, in itself, is a form of resistance.
About
Inclusive writing [for the French version]
We have chosen to use inclusive writing only in this section, given the diversity of origins, cultures, ages, and people who will read this site. To ensure the smoothest possible reading experience for those who are not fluent in French or are less familiar with the language, we have avoided using midpoints and contracted forms, which can hinder understanding.
Since inclusive writing is still recent and not widely used, we have decided to limit it to our introduction.
However, we continue to advocate daily for a non-sexist and neutral form of writing that makes a plurality of genders visible and included.
Our Team
We are Murmure, a collective of six students in social and cultural communication at IHECS, brought together by a shared refusal:
Letting the housing crisis become normalized
Together, we combined our skills to create a tool that is supportive, practical, and human — in service of tenants in Brussels. This project originates from the desire to address the crisis of access to decent housing in its entirety, but it focuses here solely on the issue of substandard housing.
Le Cri des Locataires is our way of contributing to a collective struggle, using what we know how to do.
