The purpose of the website

Help and guidance to housing professionals

The site addresses three common forms of unsanitary conditions :

Humidity

Pests

Heating

By clicking on each topic, you will access information about the laws, your rights and possible solutions if you are affected.

The ‘Who to contact?’ page lists organisations active in the field of housing. You can sort them according to your needs and/or your municipality.

The ‘How to take action?’ page explains your rights as a tenant through three short, clear videos.

The purpose of the testimonials is to inform, to highlight the seriousness of poor housing conditions and to show that these situations are often shared and systemic.

Finally, The glossary lists important words related to housing and unsanitary conditions to help you better understand the terms used.

Our vision

a fundamental right trampled upon, a collective answer

The right to housing is written in the Belgian Constitution. But in Brussels, this right is too often ignored: excessive rents, unsanitary housing, discrimination, evictions, …

With Le Cri des Locataires, we wanted to create a simple and concrete response to this reality. We are not speaking on behalf of the people concerned.

We listen, we relay, we create connections.

This site is a front-line tool:

To inform tenants about their rights

To guide towards useful resources

Giving a voice to those who are not heard

Our approach is based on research, testimonials and discussions with housing associations and public actors.

This project is based on a simple idea: by making rights accessible and understandable, we are empowering tenants. And that, in itself, is a form of resistance.

inclusive writing

(Betreft alleen de Franse versie)

We have decided to write only this section in an inclusive manner, given the diversity of backgrounds, cultures, ages, and individuals who will read this site. In order to make readingas fluid as possible for non-french speakers or those unfamiliar with the language, we have avoided using hyphens and contracted forms, which can limit comprehension.

As the use of inclusive writing is recent and not widely used, we have decided to limit its use to our presentation.

Nevertheless, we strive daily to use non-sexist and neutral language that highlights and includes a plurality of genders.

Our team

We are Murmure, a collective of six students studying social and cultural communication at IHECS, united by a shared rejection:

Allowing the housing crisis to become commonplace

Together, we have united our skills to create a supportive, practical and people-focused tool for tenants in Brussels. This project stems from a desire to tackle the crisis of access to decent housing in its entirety, but here it focuses solely on the issue of unsanitary housing.

Le Cri des Locataires, This is our way of contributing to a collective struggle, in our own way.

Translation

The website is currently available in French, English and Dutch. We would very much like to translate it into more languages spoken in Brussels, but this is not planned for the moment.
